DevOps

CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, monitoring, and infrastructure as code

  • 8 lessons
  • 4 hours
  • Intermediate
  • Graded labs: 1

What you will learn

  • Automate repetitive tasks with Bash scripts, pipes and exit codes.
  • Use Git branching and pull requests, and resolve a merge conflict without losing work.
  • Containerize an application with a Dockerfile and explain layers and build caching.
  • Design a CI pipeline (build, test, scan, deploy) that fails fast and is cheap to run.
  • Describe Pods, Deployments and Services, and perform a rolling update with a rollback plan.
  • Define environments as code and review a plan diff before applying it.
  • Instrument a service with metrics and logs, define an SLO and compute its error budget.
  • Add security gates (secret scanning, dependency and image scanning) to a pipeline.

How you are assessed

DevOps is judged on reliability and repeatability: quizzes check your reasoning about pipelines and failure, and the shell lab proves you can script a task that gives the same answer every time.

To pass this track
  • Complete every Foundations lesson
  • Average on first-try quizzes: at least 70%
  • Graded lab exercises to pass: 1

  • Lessons

    Cover the toolchain

Complete the Linux, Git, Docker and CI/CD lessons.

  • Quizzes

    Reason about failure

Average at least 70% on first-try quizzes about pipelines, rollbacks and observability.

  • Lab exercises

    Script it

Pass the Bash log-summary lab: parse input, aggregate and print stable output.

  • Challenges

    Fix a broken system

Solve one systems challenge (permissions, processes or networking).

Curriculum

Module 1 · 4 lessons

The delivery toolchain

Shell, Git, containers and your first pipeline.

0/4
  1. 1.Linux & Shell — The DevOps Cockpit

Command line, bash scripting, cron jobs, file permissions, and process management. DevOps engineers live in the terminal — Linux is the operating system of the cloud.

    30 min 2 exercises 1 quiz Graded labs: 1
  2. 2.Git for DevOps — Workflows & Versioning

Branching strategies (GitFlow, trunk-based), pull requests, merge conflicts, tagging releases, and monorepos. DevOps starts with solid version control practices.

    30 min 2 exercises 1 quiz
  3. 3.Docker — Containers for DevOps

Containers, Dockerfiles, images, volumes, networking, and docker-compose. Docker changed software deployment forever — it's the foundation of all modern DevOps.

    30 min 1 exercise 1 quiz
  4. 4.CI/CD Pipelines — Automated Delivery

GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins — automate testing, building, and deploying on every commit. CI/CD is the core practice of DevOps: ship code faster and safer.

Module 2 · 3 lessons

Run it in production

Kubernetes, environments as code and observability.

0/3
  1. 5.Kubernetes — Orchestrating Containers

Pods, deployments, services, ingress, ConfigMaps, Secrets, Helm charts, and cluster management. Kubernetes is the industry standard for container orchestration at scale.

    30 min 1 exercise 1 quiz
  2. 6.Infrastructure as Code — Environments in Git

Terraform for provisioning infrastructure, Ansible for configuration management. Write infrastructure like software: version it, test it, and deploy it automatically.

    25 min 1 exercise 1 quiz
  3. 7.Monitoring & Observability — Seeing Production

Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), and distributed tracing. If you can't observe it, you can't fix it. Monitoring is what separates DevOps from ops.

Secure delivery

Shift security left without slowing teams down.

0/1
  1. 8.DevSecOps — Security Built In

Shift security left: SAST/DAST scanning in CI, secrets detection, container image scanning (Trivy), and compliance as code. Security is now a shared DevOps responsibility.

    25 min 1 exercise 1 quiz

Run a real example

This is the kind of code you will write. Run it, then change it and run it again.

JavaScript (Node.js)

Every extra nine cuts the downtime you can afford by 10×, which is why SLOs drive how you deploy. Try a 7-day window.

Recommended challenges
